Time at a shipper or receiver is time the truck is not earning. Accessorial pay for waiting exists, but it is rarely automatic. It depends on the terms you agreed to and the proof you can show.
Detention
Detention is pay for time spent waiting beyond a free period at pickup or delivery, often two hours. The rate confirmation should state when detention starts, the hourly rate, any cap, and how to request it, which is often within a set window after the delay.
Layover
Layover is pay when a load cannot be picked up or delivered on the scheduled day and the truck must wait overnight or longer. Like detention, it should be written into the rate confirmation with a set amount per day.
Truck ordered not used (TONU)
TONU is a flat amount paid when a load is cancelled after the truck has been dispatched or has arrived. Without a TONU term in writing, a cancelled load may pay nothing.
Proof that gets claims paid
- Arrival and departure times written on the bill of lading and signed when possible.
- ELD location and time records that match.
- A message to the broker when the free time is about to run out.
- Photos with timestamps for long delays.
Ask before you sign
If a rate confirmation does not mention detention, layover or TONU, ask for the terms before signing. Our rate confirmation checker lists what to confirm.
