The pre-trip inspection: ten minutes that prevent the worst days

A steady pre-trip routine catches tires, brakes, lights and leaks before they become a breakdown or an out-of-service order at a roadside inspection.

Drivers must be satisfied the truck is in safe operating condition before driving, and inspection reports and repairs must be handled as the federal rules require. A consistent routine, in the same order every time, is what makes it work.

A simple order

  • Walk around: leaks, damage, lights and reflectors.
  • Tires, wheels and lug nuts.
  • Brakes, air lines and connections.
  • Coupling: fifth wheel, kingpin, locking jaws.
  • In the cab: gauges, mirrors, wipers, horn, emergency equipment.

Write it down

Report defects, get them fixed, and keep the records. Many roadside violations are found on items a pre-trip would have caught.

Our pre-trip checklist walks through each item and saves your progress.
