Running the detention clock

Detention is only paid when the times are documented. Starting the clock on arrival and telling the broker before free time ends makes the claim hard to deny.

Most rate confirmations allow a set amount of free time, often two hours, before detention pay starts. The terms are in the rate confirmation.

Document it

  • Check in on time and note the arrival time.
  • Get the in and out times on the bill of lading if possible.
  • Tell the broker before free time ends that the truck is still waiting.
  • Send the times and the claim the same day.

Our detention clock counts the billable time live.
