Every household and every business has papers that matter: licenses, registrations, insurance policies, titles, leases, certificates and estate documents. Most people only look for them when something has gone wrong.
Make the list
For each document, write down what it is, whose it is, where the original is kept and when it expires. You do not need to write down the numbers on it; the list is about finding it, not copying it.
Watch the expiration dates
Driver's licenses, commercial licenses, medical certificates, vehicle registrations, insurance policies and business licenses all expire. Check the list every month and start renewals 60 to 90 days early.
Keep originals safe, copies handy
Keep originals in one safe place, such as a fireproof box or a safe deposit box. Keep scanned copies in a secure, backed-up folder.
Tell someone
A trusted family member or partner should know where the list and the originals are. In an emergency, that matters more than anything else on it.
Our important documents inventory keeps the list and flags anything expiring in the next 90 days.
