Labeling exhibits for hearings and trial

Exhibits must be marked so everyone, including the judge and the court reporter, refers to the same document. Consistent labels prevent confusion in the courtroom.

Courts and individual judges have their own rules for marking exhibits. Counsel decides the numbering; staff prepare the labels and the list.

Common practice

  • One side uses numbers and the other letters, or each side uses its own prefix, as the court directs.
  • Label every page set the same way, in the same corner.
  • Keep the exhibit list in the same order as the labels.

Check the judge's instructions

Some judges pre-mark exhibits or require them filed in advance.

Our exhibit label maker prints a sheet of numbered labels.
