When pay swings from week to week, a budget built on the best weeks breaks in the slow ones. A steadier method uses your own history.
Start from your real numbers
List the last 12 weeks of take-home pay. Look at the average, and at the lowest few weeks.
Budget from the floor
Set the bills and basic spending to what the lower weeks can cover. In good weeks, the extra goes first to a buffer account, then to savings and debt.
Pay yourself a steady amount
Some people deposit all income into one account and pay themselves the same amount each week from it. The buffer absorbs the swings.
Set aside taxes
1099 income has no withholding. Move a set percentage to a tax account with every payment; your tax preparer can suggest the right amount.
Our variable income planner shows the average, the floor and a safe weekly budget.
