A ten-question health check for a small business

You do not need a consultant to know whether the basics are in place. Ten yes-or-no questions show where a business is solid and where it is exposed.

Most small-business trouble comes from the same handful of gaps: no reserve, no written agreements, taxes not set aside, records in one person's head. Each one is easy to fix once you see it.

The ten questions

  • Is business money in its own accounts?
  • Do you have at least three months of expenses in reserve?
  • Do you set aside money for taxes from every payment?
  • Does every client have a written agreement or scope?
  • Are your insurance policies current and right for the work?
  • Are your records backed up somewhere other than one device?
  • Do invoices go out within two days of finishing the work?
  • Do you know your profit margin on your main service?
  • Are your renewals and filings on a calendar?
  • Could someone keep things running if you were out for two weeks?
