Rate per hour: the number load boards do not show

Two loads can pay the same per mile and very different per hour. Counting deadhead, loading time and waiting shows which load really pays.

Rate per mile is the common yardstick, but a truck's real limit is time. A short load with a long wait can pay less per hour than a longer, smoother run.

Count all the hours

  • Driving the loaded miles.
  • Driving the empty miles to pickup.
  • Loading and unloading.
  • Expected waiting.

Compare the result

Divide the rate by the total hours. Subtract fuel to see what each hour earns toward everything else.

Our rate per hour calculator does the math in seconds.
