Tracking tire tread by position

Tires are a top roadside violation and a big cost. Measuring tread on a schedule shows which tires to replace before an inspector or a blowout does.

Federal rules set minimum tread depths: at least 4/32 of an inch on steer tires and 2/32 on other tires. Many carriers replace well before those limits.

For each tire, record

  • Unit and position, such as steer left or drive axle 1 outer right.
  • Brand and the date installed.
  • Tread depth at each check, with the date.

Check regularly

Measure at least monthly, and look at wear patterns. Uneven wear points to alignment or inflation problems.

Our tire tread log flags tires near the limit.
